INTRODUCTION OF CERTUNIV LTD.

The CERTUNIV Railway Certification and Consulting Ltd. was established in 2007, in order to bring to life a competent knowledge centre in the field of railway command, control and signalling field, with respect to consultancy, assessment and certification issues.

The aim of the company is to become such a workshop, which is capable to answer new questions and face new challenges in the field of railway command, control and signalling, where high level of expertise, skills, theoretical knowledge, international view and connections are necessary.

Beside the fulfilment of our services at a high quality, our primary goal is to reach the notified body status in the field of assessment of interoperability of conventional and high speed railway systems. According to our experiences and field of interest, we would like to be notified solely with respect to the subsystem CCS (command, control and signalling). The conformance assessment is fulfilled within our company according to the standards EN ISO/IEC 17020.

 

Since the not very far establishment, the company has already co-operated in several projects:

  • Analysis of the legal environment and the possible approval modes of the Hungarian GSM-R system (the report was conciliated with the National Transportation Authority (NKH) and the Telecommunication, Electrification and Signalling Department of the Hungarian State Railways (MÁV TEB))
  • Participation in the research and development programme in the project “Assessment concept of train control systems for light/local railway systems”.
  • Training for the National Transportation Authority (NKH) in ETCS (10+50 hours)
  • Organization of the conference “Interoperability and Safety in Railway Transportation “ and the international symposium “FORMS/FORMAT 2008” in co-operation with the Department of Control and Transport Automation, Budapest University of Technology and Economics.
  • Assessment of the railway interlocking remote control system, supplied by Prolan Co. for the Hungarian State Railways.

 

The competence, which is absolutely necessary to reach our goals is ensured primarily by our head staff:

Prof. Dr. Géza Tarnai (managing director), CSc, leader expert of the Hungarian Chamber of Engineers. His experience dates back to 45 years in the field of analysis, proof, safety assessment, development and planning in railway transportation systems. He has been the leader of more than 100 national research and development projects as well as industrial projects. He participated in several international research and development projects. Amongst other, he managed the development and engineering tasks for the interface the first electronic interlocking system in Hungary, just like other interfacing projects with signalling systems. He is a team leader of the project called MODURBAN in the 6th European frame programme and continuously the of the MODSAFE project in the 7th FP, which deal with light railway systems with their risk, assessment and safety issues. He is a key person in the co-operation of several universities, research institutions and industrial partners in the field of railway transportation.

Dr. Géza Szabó (managing director), PhD. Transportation expert of the Hungarian Chamber of Engineers. He has got 15 years of experience in the design and analysis of safety-critical systems, especially in the area of railway signalling. He was the leader of numerous certification processes of railway transportation components, he acts as independent expert in development processes. Furthermore, he participated in the reconstruction works of the safety protection system of the nuclear power plant, Paks, where he carried out safety analysis tasks, developing new techniques for the analysis of adaptive logics. He is the participant of several projects, aiming the safety analysis of vehicle onboard systems (e.g. brake systems). He is the project leader in the knowledge centre “Advanced vehicles and vehicle control”, which operates at the Budapest University of Technology and Economics.

Dr. Balázs Sághi (QA director), PhD. His experience in the design of safety critical systems and formal analysis of those is more than 10 years. His activities involve functional and safety specification of railway interlocking systems and components as well as development of interfaces for signalling systems. He is a participant of several national research and development projects just like that of European-wide programmes, like MODURBAN or MODSAFE.

Dr. Gábor Rácz (commercial director), transportation expert of the Hungarian Chamber of Engineers. His practical experience is more than 35 years in the area of safety-critical systems, especially in microcomputer controlled traffic control systems. He participated in the reconstruction works of the safety protection system of the nuclear power plant, Paks, where his main activity was the testing of the system, with special respect to test planning and generation. His special area of interest is the application of GNSS technology in transportation systems.

The members of the head staff all act as university staff at the Department of Control and Transport Automation, Budapest University of Technology and Economics. Therefore they are committed to high level education and re-search, thus the motivation of their work in Certuniv Ltd. is not limited to the efficient and prospering running of the company; social and educational utility of the activities is also always a key aspect.
